3 Major Text Editing Types

As a serious reader, you might have found out online that there are many different types of text editing. But I would love to make it clearer that there are only three major ones that matter the most. This is because one type of text editing can or may look like two.

Developmental Editing

This type of text editing has got several names. Some call it substantive, others call it structural, and so on and so forth. This is the heaviest text editing type available. It looks at the general concept of the text, its message and the meaning. It looks at the big picture, and then tries to break that picture into bits of well arranged, well organized logical order.

  • Content and outline.
  • Font sizes, font faces, line spacing and general formatting.
  • Logical organization of thoughts throughout the text.

Copy Editing

Like the developmental editing, this type of text editing is also known as line editing. It may have different names, too. Yes, it’s line editing for sure. It looks at grammar, syntax, word usage, and many other text-line elements. If English is your fourth language like me, then you need to pay attention on this type of editing as a self-publisher. Yet, technology is your best friend.

  • Spelling and grammar.
  • Overall clarity on behalf of readers.
  • Cross-checks references, arts, figures, tables, equations and more.

Proofreading

This is the lightest type of text editing compared to the first two in the list. It looks at everything from developmental to copy editing. It cross-checks every part of the text to find out anything missed in the first attempts. Yes, proofreading is very important before publishing the text.

  • Overview of the whole text against the first edits.
  • Reading for typographic errors.
  • Correcting errors that escaped the first edits.
